Delivering on our Climate Change commitments

6 Jun 2021

Liberal Democrats in Guildford are delivering on our 2019 local manifesto commitments on climate change, with key milestones having been achieved by this year's World Environment Day. Guildford Borough Council's carbon emissions have been cut by 43% from 2009 levels, a year ahead of schedule, and this year Guildford will see its first ever Car Free Day on 26th September.

Lib Dem council group leader, Cllr Julia McShane, said:

"In our manifesto for the 2019 borough elections we promised to start the journey to make Guildford a carbon-neutral borough, to improve air quality and recycling rates, and to support the switch to sustainable modes of transport.

"I am incredibly proud that, two years on, we are leading the way on tackling the climate emergency. We are on course to meet our goal of net carbon neutrality as a council by 2030, we've cut our use of single-use plastics and installed water bottle refilling stations across the town centre, we're providing more electric vehicle charging points and our vehicle fleet will be fully electric by 2030. We have one of the best recycling rates in the country, we've made our council meetings paperless and we have the most Green Flag parks in the south east.

"This shows what a difference it makes to have Liberal Democrats in charge at local councils. We are not resting on our laurels, and there is still a huge amount of work to be done to make Guildford a truly carbon neutral borough, but the progress we've made in the past two years is a real testament to the hard work of council staff and all the Lib Dem team, especially the Lead Member for Climate Change, Jan Harwood."
