Poll shows Guildford’s Conservative MP losing their seat to the Liberal Democrats at the next election
A new MRP poll from Opinium has predicted the Liberal Democrats would defeat the Conservative Party in Guildford constituency if an election was held soon.
The MRP polling method estimates constituency-level results at elections.
The poll reveals the Liberal Democrats as the clear challenges with Labour and the Green party a very distant third and fourth on just 21% and 6% respectively. Nationally, the poll shows dozens of ''Blue Wall' seats falling to the Lib Dems, following the disastrous mini budget which has increased mortgage bills by hundreds of pounds a month.
At the last election, Guildford constituency was a two horse race between the Liberal Democrats and the Conservatives with Zöe Franklin just 3,337 behind the Conservatives.
In recent months the Liberal Democrats have won three historic parliamentary by-elections against the Conservative party, including Chesham & Amersham, North Shropshire and Tiverton and Honiton.
Zöe Franklin has said campaigning for investment in local services such as local hospitals, GPs and dentists is their top priority and a key reason for their rising support locally.
Reacting to the poll, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate for Zöe Franklin said:
"Guildford is on a knife edge at the next election. The choice for local people at the next election will be between our hard working local Liberal Democrat team, and an out of touch and grossly incompetent Conservative Government.
"People here tell me they are fed up with long ambulance waiting times, a lack of GP appointments, failure to tackle the climate crisis and sewage being pumped into local rivers.
"For too long this Conservative Government has taken our area for granted. The Conservative party cannot be trusted with our economy, local health services or our treasured environment.
People here know that only the Liberal Democrats can beat the Conservative party in Guildford and offer a fairer deal."
