Guildford welcomes its first Changing Places toilet
GBC Lib Dem Councillor Angela Goodwin (lead member for access and disability) was interviewed this morning by BBC Surrey Radio following a press release by Guildford's Friary Centre last week.
Whilst accessible toilets are found throughout the town, they don't meet everyone's needs. This much needed facility is being built on the same level in the Friary Centre as the accessible car parking spaces and 'Shopmobility' in Bedford Road car park, so its location is ideal. It should be ready in time for Christmas.
Angela says "I'm really pleased that a 'Changing Places' toilet is being installed by the Friary with the support of the Council. It will help people with profound, multiple learning disabilities or a variety of physical disabilities to meet their toileting needs when they come to Guildford. Carers and family members can use the extra equipment (such as an adult sized changing bench, hoist and central placed toilet) and additional space to help people in a dignified, comfortable and safe way.
"Changing Places toilets are provided in addition to accessible toilets; there are two in Woking and one at RHS Garden Wisley."
"'Access for all' is a priority and I hope that we'll see more Changing Places toilets being installed across Guildford."
