Cllr Fiona White demands action on roads

7 Aug 2007

Local Lib Dem councillor Fiona White has demanded action on Park Barn and Westborough's roads in a letter to the Surrey Advertiser.

Dear Sir

Your correspondent Graham Richings (Surrey Advertiser 27th July) actually hit the nail on the head in the final paragraph of his letter - many of our current highways problems ARE due to the incompetence of Conservative-run Surrey County Council in managing the highways contract. The failure to make sure that the contractors carried out the work efficiently and to a suitably high standard has been well documented. Perhaps your readers are not aware that the County Council could have enforced legislation against organisations who dig up the roads such as the water, gas and electricity companies, to make them reinstate. In fact, Surrey failed to do that which means that Surrey residents have had to meet the costs through council tax.

As the County Councillor for Guildford West, I have been pressing for urgent major repair works to be carried out to many major routes throughout that part of the town. I will continue to campaign until the work is done and done properly.

As the current MP for Guildford is from the same political party as those who run the County Council, it is a shame that she has not been able to persuade her political colleagues at County Hall to put an end to the many years of shameful neglect in repairing and maintaining local roads which the people of Park Barn & Westborough have had to suffer.

Yours faithfully

Fiona White

Borough Councillor - Westborough Ward

County Councillor - Guildford West
