An Evening with ex-Panorama Journalist, John Sweeney, discussing his new bestseller - KILLER IN THE KREMLIN

23 Aug 2022

Guildford Liberal Democrats are delighted to host what will be an engaging and informative evening with one of the UK's most respected investigative journalists and writers. John will tell us the background behind his new bestseller, Killer In the Kremlin, which documents the history of serial killer, Vladimir Putin and his habit of violent and spiteful killings, either of swathes of peoples he doesn't care for, or of individuals whose presence on this earth is inconvenient for the Russian fascist.

The best bit about John (well we would say this, wouldn't we) is that he is a member of the Liberal Democrats. He, like all of us, believes in progressive liberal democracy, is a passionate supporter of the European Union and voted Remain in the UK's divisive Referendum of 2016.

The ticket price for this event gives you access to the event and includes one free drink and some nibbles.

You can also buy a copy of John's book with your ticket which John will sign for you on the night.

You will also get a chance to meet Zöe Franklin, Guildford's next MP, as she will be coming along to this special evening.

John Sweeney's career is quite remarkable. Early on he was reporting for the Observer for twelve years before moving to be staff reporter for the BBC's flagship news programme, Panorama, as well as Newsnight.

Many of his films and reports have become part of the country's news narrative. He spent four years investigating the "cot death" cases of three women, including Sally Clark and Angela Cannings, who had been falsely imprisoned for allegedly killing their children. His exposure of the invalidity of the expert witness allowed all three women to have the cases against them overturned and their freedom returned, and the film changed forever how cot death was viewed. For this film he won the coveted Paul Foot Award in 2005

Sweeney produced exposés of the Church of Scientology, of North Korea, of the Fake Sheikh, of Far Right activist Tommy Robinson and in 2017 his documentary Trump, the Kremlin Candidate aired just days before Donald Trump's inauguration.

In 2020 John's podcast series, Hunting Ghislaine, about the now-convicted paedophile enabler, Ghislaine Maxwell, hit number one in the Apple Podcast charts. His current podcast series, Taking On Putin takes the listener right into Ukraine as war rages around him, asking what will be the consequences of this, the first invasion into Europe by an aggressor since 1945. Having followed Putin's murderous career for 20 years, John Sweeney knows more than anyone just how evil and murderous the serial killer Vladimir Putin is.

Now free from the burden of working for corporations and media organisations John Sweeney is now completely independent and self-funded by supporters and freelance work. He currently spends most of his time in Ukraine reporting from the front line and publishing a daily video update on Twitter, and for his Patreon supporters by email.

It is really worth listening to John's podcast series 'Taking On Putin'. You can find this on most podcast platforms. And do follow John's daily reports from Ukraine on Twitter (around 2 mins each day) - his twitter handle is @johnsweeneyroar.
