Liberal Democrat Candidate for Guildford Zöe Franklin responds to UKOG's announcement of a gas discovery at Dunsfold.

"I share local people's grave concerns about this latest development in their battle to protect the environment and save the beautiful Surrey Hills from irreparable harm.

"The destruction of the landscape and wildlife habitat is unforgivable. And at a time when we are facing a climate crisis, how can the Government even be considering allowing this to go ahead?

"We should be investing in renewable energy and reducing our dependence on fossil fuels, not destroying the environment by digging for more.

"The Government overruled local democracy and the wishes of local people to approve this drilling last year.

"There has never been a more crucial time to protect our environment and green spaces. The stakes are too high to waste time. This drilling must not be allowed to go ahead."
