Responding to the news that Michael Gove's Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Community has overturned the refusal of UK Oil and Gas' (UKOG) application to undertake exploratory drilling for gas and oil (fracking) near Dunsfold, Guildford and Waverley Liberal Democrats Parliamentary Candidates Zöe Franklin and Paul Follows have issued the following joint statement:

The government has slashed funding for free school meals for 4-7-year-olds in Surrey by £940,756.00 in real terms, shocking new figures uncovered by the Liberal Democrats have revealed.

The party said it is another example of the Conservatives "short-changing our children."

Universal Infant Free School Meals were introduced by the Liberal Democrats, to provide free school meals to all pupils in reception, Year 1 and Year 2. However, since the policy was introduced seven years ago, the Conservatives have increased funding per pupil by just 4 pence, from £2.30 to £2.34, or an increase of 1.7%.

The local Liberal Democrats have branded Angela Richardson's response to the Sue Gray report "disrespectful" to people across Guildford, Cranleigh and our villages who abided by lockdown rules.

The Sue Gray report included pictures of Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak together at a birthday party. The report came with a damning line to Boris Johnson's Government, saying, "the senior leadership at the centre, both political and official, must bear responsibility for this culture."

In recent weeks, across Guildford and Cranleigh, as the Guildford Lib Dem team and I have knocked on doors to talk to residents, the number one topic that people want to discuss is the skyrocketing cost of living. People are deeply concerned about what the combination of rising fuel, food and energy prices, tax rises, benefit cuts and 10% inflation will mean for them and their families over the coming months, but especially from the autumn and beyond. They share with us about how their food bills have risen, many talk about how their energy bills have more than doubled, and almost everyone says that they are having to cut back on leisure and holiday plans - some even say they will need to cut back on essentials.

Lib Dem councillors have highlighted the experience of Ukrainian school-age children who have arrived to live with their hosts in Surrey under the Government's Homes for Ukraine Scheme but are still waiting to secure a place at a local school.

Lance Spencer (Goldsworth East and Horsell Village) raised the issue at this week's Council meeting citing the example of a child who had recently arrived in the area but had been unsuccessful in their application to a school just 200 metres from the host family's home.

Guildford Liberal Democrats are asking residents to support a simpler community-wide 20 mph zone.

This petition will be used to encourage Surrey County Council to follow many other highways authorities such as Lancashire, Cambridgeshire and Oxfordshire to radically change their approach to the introduction of 20 mph speed limits in areas where it is currently 30mph.

Ever since the extent of sewage pollution in our rivers and coastal waters, I have regularly had conversations with residents who are angry and upset over the Conservative Government's failure to stop sewage dumping in our rivers and coastal waters.

The Conservative Government has tried to say publicly that it shares that anger and is acting decisively to bring an end to the issue. Nothing could be further from the truth.
