Rail plans for Cranleigh welcomed by Sue

November 18, 2009 7:03 PM
A non-nuclear future would mean no need to transport waste on trains

"A rail line to Cranleigh would make a lot of difference to Guildford's congestion problems"

"The plan to bring back rail to Cranleigh is well worth more investigation " was Sue's verdict following the meeting of Waverley Borough Councils Environmental & Leisure Overview Committee last Thursday.

Warmly welcoming the proposals for return of the rail service to Cranleigh she said:

" There are some issues which need to overcome to ensure that there continues to be good access to the footpath and cycleway which are on the track bed and which are very well used.

" We must do more to reduce traffic on the A281 which is bound to increase when housing is built on Broadbridge Heath. We must also give serious consideration to a platform close to the Artington Park and Ride if we are to cut back on traffic into Guildford.

With considerable daily travel, particularly by students in addition to daytime commuting the rail line could provide a valuable link to Guildford, Woking and London. The train could also contribute to a reduction in delays in Bramley which occur during school terms.

Sue said "With the growth in car travel, we are not far away from a gridlocked situation in Guildford particularly in the rush hour. We must really do all we can to improve this situation and reduce the need for car travel into and through Guildford.
