Sue Doughty today called for Guildford residents to support the petition on the Number 10 website which requests the government to call a halt to housing plans imposed by the Regional Spatial Strategies and to allow local councils to decide for themselves how to meet housing needs.
Sue said: "It is outrageous that the government has imposed totally unrealistic targets in Surrey which could see councils forced to build in flood plains or on green belt land. We all agree that the area needs more housing, especially for those on lower incomes but councils should be developing these plans for themselves."
With many residents already angry about the government decision to impose far more houses than can be absorbed in Surrey Sue hopes that local people will join her in signing the petition.
The petition is as follows:
We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to suspend
regional housing targets determined through the Regional
Spatial Strategy, empowering local councils instead to set
their own targets based on local, sustainable housing needs
assessments and consultation with local communities.
