Report reminds us to reduce energy use in the home

July 2, 2008 3:14 PM

Energy-saving light bulb. The National Audit Office published a report this week which suggests that although we are starting to see a reversal of the long-term growth in household energy consumption, more work is needed in order to maintain this fall in household energy use.

"If an average household were to take up the energy savings measures that are available, they could see a 30% drop in their energy bills. Just getting in to the habit of turning off your lights and not leaving appliances on stand by for example can make a significant difference", said Sue.

"Between 1990 and 2004, household energy efficiency improved by 19 per cent. However, according to the NAO's report, this positive step is counteracted by a rise in the energy consumption of households, partly due to the increase in demand for electronic goods."

Sue continues, "Overall, the conclusion drawn is that although programmes to promote energy efficient appliances have had some effect, in relation to take-up and the products available, other countries are probably doing far better."

Liberal Democrats want to bring forward a package of measures, including Green Home initiatives that would encourage energy efficiency for both individuals and businesses.
